Kitchen remodel

After redoing the sunroom, we really wanted to redo the kitchen - what a HUGE task that turned out to be!  First, they laid the same icky green carpet throughout the kitchen as well, and we found that they also laid a second layer of sub-flooring.  So, what we did was remove the top layer of sub-flooring, which eliminated the gross glue problem we had in the sunroom!

We also decided to convert this weird corner area into a closet pantry and a built in computer desk.

The kitchen was quite dated and tired looking.   There was a sofit all the way around the room with an older style border that needed to go.

We had already started tearing things out when I remembered that I hadn't taken pictures yet!  :/

The kitchen had an L shaped counter on the wall it shares with the sunroom (that L end goes away with the remodel).

And there was a small wall at the end of the opposite wall that is on the backside of the living room.  If you see the wall on the right side of this picture - that wall goes away, extending the kitchen into the original dining room area.

On the other side of the wall mentioned above, is this little bookshelf that was between the living room and the dining room.

This gives the perspective looking from the dining room back into the kitchen.

Here is another look at the little corner area that will eventually become a pantry (blue tape outlining it) and computer corner.

Cupboards half way down!

Interestingly, the area the microwave was had a small amount of some old tile behind it.

And lucky for us - we did not have a fire, since they had wires that were only protected by a strip of duct tape!

Here is a drawing of what we are planning for the new cupboards and layout.  We are changing the kitchen to a galley style set up.

Some of the work was up in the ceiling - Hi Darwin!

Getting closer to getting the whole wall down!

Here's a look at the kitchen looking towards the front door.

Roughing in the new closet pantry!

The wall is DOWN!  Look how huge that makes the house look with that wall down!

Here is the wall studs for the new pantry!

This shows the extension to the wall that Darwin built.

Rocking the doorway!

Looking from the front door back towards the sunroom.  Tiger is checking out the pantry too!

New wall all mudded, wired and primered!

We let the kids autograph the wall!

It started to get out of control a bit!  :)

Ready for cupboards!

The cupboard (chocolate brown), flooring (reddish brown), countertop (granite with dark chips) & backsplash stone that we chose.

Cupboards are here!  Time to try installing!

First one ready!

Great to get some awesome help!

I LOVE this light!  The picture does not do it justice!

Cupboards are in!

The top of the desk - a surprise for someone to discover years from now when they decide to remodel the kitchen to their liking!

We haven't decided what we are going to do with the dining room area at the other end of this room - so we didn't change out that light yet.

Time for flooring!

And then time for countertops and backsplashes!  A local guy (Alex Moreno) did a great job with them!

We still have some trim work to finish and trim paint work.

Now that it is done, the only thing I would do different is to pull more color in, but it is a beautiful room(s) and we are very close to finishing the details so we can say the entire downstairs is done!
